Alma Vii Fortified Evangelical Church

About the house

In 1356 Alma Vii is first mentioned as a free commune belonging to the town of Mediaș. During the same period the Evangelical Church is built on a hilltop, North of the village. In the sixteenth century fortifications were built around the Saxon Church in Alma Vii so that it could never be conquered. The Saxons who lived here surrounded it with towers, firing posts and holes for throwing pitch on top of invaders.

THE EVANGELICAL FORTIFIED CHURCH IN ALMA VII

In 1356 Alma Vii is first mentioned as a free commune belonging to the town of Mediaș. During the same period the Evangelical Church is built on a hilltop, North of the village. In the sixteenth century fortifications were built around the Saxon Church in Alma Vii so that it could never be conquered. The Saxons who lived here surrounded it with towers, firing posts and holes for throwing pitch on top of invaders.

Between 2015 and 2016, the Mihai Eminescu Trust conducted in Alma Vii a project entitled „Centre for the interpretation of traditional culture Alma Vii – Rehabilitation and functional conversion of the fortification”. The main goals of the project were the restoration of the fortified enclosure of the evangelical church and the development of the local community. The villagers of Alma Vii were consulted from the onset on how the church should be used after the restoration so that everything would be done according to their wishes and needs. Even though religious service is no longer being held here, the church is still considered by locals an important landmark for the identity of the village, and it remains a centre where the local community gathers for important events and celebrations.

CULTURAL EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS

Having the entire fortification to yourself

The Evangelical Church in Alma Vii has been restored by the Mihai Eminescu Trust between April 2015 and August 2016. It has been adapted to serve as a cultural centre for the local community and a museum telling the story of the multiethnic population inhabiting the region.

In the yard, surrounded by the fortifications, it features an outside wooden scene with wooden benches, an appropriate set-up for music and dance shows, for movie projections and theatre plays. It is therefore perfectly fitted to host cultural events and other celebrations for small groups of people. On the ground floor of the main tower there is also a hall, The Saxon Storeroom that can be used for indoor activities or for serving meals.
